Role: Creative Lead
Duration: Aug 2020 - Present
Oversight: Brand Identity, Marketing Materials, etc
Delaware Rising Football Club (DRFC) is a nonprofit minor-league men’s and women’s soccer club based in Delaware, OH. They feature both men’s and women’s teams that compete throughout the state of Ohio. As a new soccer club in 2020, they needed an identity and branding to match as well as additional supporting materials (website / social graphics / merchandise / etc).
research
Research for the community-centered organization began with examining how the club can be an extension of the Delaware culture: its’ people, its’ history, and its’ landscape. There were many avenues to conduct this research. I surfed the internet, conversed with local residents, walked through the downtown areas, and combed articles from the local newspaper, the Delaware Gazette. There were many notable themes to explore; however, a few stood out the most. Delaware County has the most coastline of all Ohio counties, is known by locals for its historic downtown area, and is known on the world-stage for hosting the Brown Jug, a part of the triple crown harness racing for young pacers.
The research also involved investigating the rich sports scene in the area: collegiate, high school, youth clubs, other soccer-related teams. I wanted to create an identity that was unique and stood out from the surrounding teams.
BRANDING
The shape of the crest is unique, resembling the architecture from the facades of buildings found in downtown Delaware, as well as a crown referencing the Little Brown Jug race held every year. The four water lines resemble the four rivers that flow through Delaware County. The year 1808 at the top is the founding of the city of Delaware. The colors used offer a mature navy blue and an energetic cyan, which can appeal to both the aging population as well as the large amount of young families moving to the area. Its’ style is simple with only one weight of line. This allows it to be easily memorable and re-creatable for new fans. Altogether, this logo provides a solid solution that encompasses the Delaware area culture.

Website Development
The website was a key component of the success for Delaware Rising. This platform would act as a hub for all club information to the public regarding the team, match schedules, results, current standings, a store, rosters, livestreams, etc. Because of the need for all of these features, a custom solution had to be built.
After a bit of research in the sports industry and different teams websites, an extensive site map was created to showcase all website pages and how they would be connected. Next, various page models were created in Adobe Photoshop before many of the individual assets were created and then coded into Squarespace using HTML and CSS.

Social Media
Social Media was another important piece of this project. The platform is not only used to market the club to fans, sell merchandise, and sell tickets, but also to showcase the experience to interested players. Not many clubs in the amateur to semi-professional ranks have good looking social graphics or even social media for that matter. So to show how much effort the club puts into the details, appeals a lot to the higher caliber players that want the added attention to help them attract the eyes of scouts.
To ensure the club had the resources to allocate to social media, we often hire media interns over the summer to help capture games, design, and schedule posts. The idea was to again emphasize the use of color and utilize player photos when possible. And
Conclusion
In conclusion, this project has been a success. It’s most visible in the sustainability and success of the business. The average lifespan of a soccer club is 2 years, and DRFC is quickly approaching its 5th year anniversary in 2025. Overall, this has been a blast to work on and a fulfilling project to further the sport in the Delaware area for the benefit of the local players and fans.
What resulted is a strong brand that is well-recognized in the Delaware area, state of Ohio, and the soccer community. The branding won a gold award from the Akron Ad Federation, and a top 32 finish in the Copa de Insignias from Protagonist Soccer for best crests in United States soccer. The club is constantly complimented for branding and the quality of materials. The club has grown considerably since 2020 and is still growing.
